Green Space Development (Parks)
The Green Space Development is an important project proposed and developed by Tiruppur Smart City Limited (TSCL), under the Smart City Mission. Green Space Development involves identifying, preserving, and developing parks and other green areas in the heartland of the city.
Tiruppur is an industrial city with a large number of industries and a high population density. Industries contribute to high levels of pollution, and excessive human activity causes the urban heat island effect (the heat trapped in built-up areas). Green spaces in the city can lessen the effects of pollution and reduce the urban heat island effect.
In order to increase the green spaces in the city, TSCL proposed the Green Space Development project under the Smart City Mission. Four parks/green areas were chosen to be developed under this project. The parks include: RayapuramRoundana Park (26 cents), Rayapuram Park behind Krishnan Kovil (92 cents), Pudhu Nagar Park (11 cents), and JG Nagar Park (62 cents).
These parks were developed to provide a lush green cover with native plants and trees, recreational facilities, a gym, and sports facilities. While the increased green cover will reduce the city’s carbon footprint and promote eco-balance, the recreational and sports facilities are bound to enhance the quality of life of the citizens.
The four parks that were developed as part of the Green Space Development project feature water fountains, open seating areas, planting of shrubs and trees (mostly native varieties), and well-built pathways. The Green Space Development project offers a range of environmental, social, health, and economic benefits.
A total of Rs. 3.88 crore was spent on the project. The work is complete, a trial run is currently in progress, and the parks will soon be open for public use.
