Description
The Solid Waste Management project has been proposed and successfully implemented by Tiruppur Smart City Limited. Under the Smart City Mission, 13 decentralized Micro Compost Centres and 3 Waste Segregation and Resource Centres have been constructed.
Tiruppur is an important industrial city in the country with a steadily increasing population. Over the years, the amount of waste produced by the different categories of waste producers, including households, commercial centres, and institutions, has been on the rise with increase in population, urbanization, change in lifestyle and consumption patterns, and related activities.
The daily waste generation that includes biodegradable and non-biodegradable in the city is around 4.80 metric tonnes. At present, door-to-door collection of waste (both household and commercial) is carried out. The collected garbage is transported to the dumping yards. Later, processing of waste is carried out for recyclable waste. The solid waste is transported and dumped in abandoned quarries located at Mudhalipalayam and Mummoorthy Nagar. This has led to numerous environmental and health problems in the city.
To avoid this open dumping of waste at these abandoned quarries, 16 micro compost centres are already in place. As the numbers are not sufficient, under the Smart City Mission, the TSCL proposed the construction of 13 more micro compost centres in the city, along with three waste segregation and resource centres.
As per the proposal, 13 new MCCs in different parts of the city and 3 waste segregation and resource centres at Barathi Nagar North, Senthil Garden in Vijayapuram, and Kallikadu Thottam in Thennampalayam have been constructed with all the required equipment, facilities, and amenities for effective solid waste management and to make the city completely dustbin free.
The total investment made on the Solid Waste Management project is Rs. 22.10 crore.

Before the SWM project came into place, our street dustbins would be overloaded and garbage would be lying all over the place, causing an ugly and unpleasant odour and scene. But now, the waste is collected appropriately, and the streets are clean without garbage.

Stakeholder: The Solid Waste Management project is a blessing to the people of Tiruppur. Earlier, there were many problems due to the indiscriminate disposal of waste from residential and commercial buildings. But now, proper practices are followed, advanced technologies are used, and manpower is increased, ultimately resulting in effective waste management and an eco-friendly environment. The SWM project is serving its purpose really well and the results are obvious.
