Description

Installation of road signs on all important roadways in Tirupur is one of the projects under the Smart City Mission.

Tiruppur is a densely populated and fast-growing city that is home to a vast migrant population. Its vehicular density is high and exponentially growing. Currently, there are some road signage posts installed by the Tiruppur Municipal Corporation, NHAI, and State Highways Department as part of their routine works. These road signs provide just the normal distance notifications, which is considered inadequate information.

Erection of road signage is important to regulate the traffic as well as optimize the service to the traffic. Eventually, the Signage project was included among the smart city initiatives in Tiruppur, and the work started in 2020.

The main objectives of signage are to guide citizens, visitors, and tourists to their destinations, regulate traffic and ensure road safety, and enhance the quality of tourist attractions. In addition, the signage work will add to the value of the city’s public information system.

The signage project proposed by the City Corporation comprises two broad categories of road signs. Out of these, one category of signs will be installed on the city’s main roads to guide tourists to their destinations, and provide information on the facilities and attractions available there. The other category of signage with prime information will be placed near important destinations and on internal roads.

The estimated cost of the road signage project at different locations in Tiruppur is Rs. 6.33 crores. 75% of the main junction area boards have been installed. Currently, single and double arrow signage installation work is in progress.
