The development of a riverfront along the river and canals of Tiruppur is an urban rejuvenation and multidimensional environmental improvement project, proposed under the Smart City Mission.

Tiruppur is home to over 9,000 knitwear units, and the majority of them are located along the water bodies Sangilipallam Odai, Jamunai Odai, and Noyyal River. As Noyyal is a seasonal river, with its peak flow only during the monsoon, it has become a reluctant host to industrial effluents and untreated sewage during the rest of the year. The river often appears pathetic, with thick foam and filth, full of industrial and residential effluents, causing ecological imbalance and a range of environmental, social, and health hazards.

To save the river from further damage and create a significant waterfront that benefits the city and its people, the Tiruppur City Corporation proposed the riverfront development project. The project was successfully started in 2020, and work is in progress.

The riverfront project aims to provide Tiruppur with a meaningful waterfront environment along the banks of the river Noyyal and to redefine the identity of the city around the river. Once completed, the riverfront will uplift the aesthetic appearance of the textile city along with creating public spaces to benefit people from different walks of life.

The major components of the riverfront development project include restoring and revitalizing the Noyyal River, developing recreational activities and commercial development along the river, reusing waste water and thereby increasing the groundwater table, and preventing environmental deterioration.

The total investment of the project estimates up to Rs. 30.50 crores. The work of laying baby channels along the water bodies in Tiruppur North and Tiruppur South is in progress.
