Description
The Macro Drainage Package 2 is a significant Smart City Mission project in Tiruppur. Every year, the Tiruppur district gets enough rain, which is actually good news. However, there was a drawback. Major flooding was a regular occurrence in a number of low-lying areas of the city due to inadequate drainage infrastructure, inadequate drains, and the flat terrain.
When considering the low-lying areas of the city, Susaiyapuram, Military Colony, Ramraj Nagar, Kumaran Colony, Vallipalayam, Vadakuthottam, ThattanThottam, Sangilipallam, and Samathanapuram are important areas that frequently flood at peak flow.
Before the project took shape, rainwater accumulated in large amounts on the streets, disrupting traffic. It also occasionally seeped into the inhabitants' homes, affecting daily life. Additionally, during periods of severe rain, the insufficient drains exceeded their capacity and flooded onto the streets, ultimately resulting in an unpleasant and dangerous environment.
The Macro Drainage project was started as a result of all of these significant problems that the general population and the government encountered during the monsoon. The primary goals of this project are to improve the drainage system, prevent water stagnation, and provide a clean environment for the citizens.
After being approved by the authorities, works of the Macro Drainage package 2 started in 2020. HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, and SWMM, three dynamic modelling programmes, were used to create the macro drainage channel. For the design of the macro drainage, the most cost-effective rectangular section (breadth = 2 x depth of flow) has been used.
As a major part of the macro drainage package 2 project, a drainage system of 12070 m has been constructed, and is connected to the existing disposal drainage. The wards covered in this project include ward numbers 42, 45, 50, and 51.
Covered drainage is in place now to collect the road surface runoff water. Bar screens are provided to prevent drainage from becoming clogged. The drainage system is completely functional and well facilitated. It is covered with slabs that allow water to flow into the drain through a number of tiny perforations. This feature not only ensures free maintenance but also keeps diseases at bay. The TSCL has ascertained that the macro drainage system is equipped with all the necessary equipment to prevent unwanted circumstances.
The total budget of the Macro Drainage package 2 project is Rs. 27.63 crore. The work was successfully completed in January 2022.

As the drains have been installed now, water will no longer stand in the roads of Tiruppur's low-lying areas. In particular during the rainy season, it is such a relief. Both the environment and the flow of traffic are under control.
