Description
Macro Drainage Package 1 is a crucial project that has been completed recently in Tiruppur under the Smart City Mission. The Tiruppur district receives adequate rainfall every year. However, due to deficient drains, inadequate drainage infrastructure, and the flat terrain, heavy flooding was a common thing in several low-lying places of the city.
Critical spots that generally flooded during peak flow include Susaiyapuram, Military Colony, Ramraj Nagar, Kumaran Colony, Vallipalayam, Vadakuthottam, ThattanThottam, Sangilipallam, and Samathanapuram. There was not only extensive stagnation of rain water on the streets affecting the traffic, but water sometimes entered the houses of residents as well, posing a threat to routine life. What’s more, during heavy rains, the inadequate drains exceeded their capacity and overflowed on the streets, eventually creating an unpleasant and risky environment.
All of these major issues faced by the public and the government during the monsoon led to the initiation of the Macro Drainage project. The main objective of this project is to enhance the drainage infrastructure, avoid water stagnation, and provide a clean and sanitized environment.
The Macro Drainage Package 1 project was started in 2020 after careful study and consideration of relevant parameters. The macro drainage channel was designed using dynamic modelling software namely HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, and SWMM. The most economical rectangular section (breadth = 2 x depth of flow) has been adopted for the design of the macro drainage.
As a major part of the macro drainage package 1 project, a drainage system of 6605 m has been constructed, and it is connected to the existing disposal drainage. The wards covered in this package include ward numbers 8, 9, 12, 24, 25, 47, and 48.
The covered drainage has been used to collect the surface runoff water from the roads. To prevent clogging of drainage, a bar screen has been provided. The drain system is fully equipped and facilitated. It is covered with cover slabs that have a number of small openings so that the water can sweep into the drain. This feature not only helps in free maintenance but also helps in avoiding diseases as well.
The total budget of the Macro Drainage Package 1 is Rs. 27.63 crore. The work was successfully completed in January 2022.

This project helped identify the low-lying area of Tiruppur, and now that the drains are laid, there is no water stagnation on the roads. It’s such a relief, especially in the rainy season. Traffic is in control and the environment is also saved.
Earlier, in our streets, sewage water will overflow and mix with rain water and pool on the streets. We can’t even go out of our houses until measures are taken to evacuate the stagnant water. But now, with the macro drainage project in place, there is no pooling of water.

The macro drainage project is completed and the city has become a cleaner place to live. It makes me feel safe and happy.
Before, even after the stagnant water is removed from the roads, there will be piles of garbage everywhere due to the overflow of drains. But now, there is no such problem, and I just love the clean look of my streets. It’s such a relief from that ugly sight of garbage lying all over the place.
