Description
The “LED Street Lights” is a significant project proposed and executed under the Smart Cities Mission in the textile city of Tiruppur. As is well known, the economy of the city is concentrated primarily around the cotton trade and hosiery market. Therefore, the need for electrical energy is always in demand in the city, which paves the way for innovative strategies and technologies to meet the increasing demand.
Before the implementation of the LED Street Lights project in the city, power shortage was a major problem. Due to the increasing number of industries, new residential areas, and extension of the city limit, the need for electricity is always on the rise. The Tiruppur Corporation planned to come up with a solution to reduce the energy consumption from street lights, which will further contribute towards reducing the city’s energy expenses.
There were 31,857 street lamps in the city before the LED Streets Light project was established. Energy efficient lamps were 24,809 (78%) in number and the remaining 6,841 (22%) were conventional lamps. However, 22% of conventional lamps contributed 36% of load sharing, whereas 78% of energy efficient lamps contributed only 64% of the total load. So, the corporation decided to replace these 36% conventional lamps with energy efficient LED street light fixtures of adequate wattage.
The TSCL effectively planned to create an integrated and comprehensive approach by adopting the latest technologies and techniques and proposed the LED Street Lights project, under the Smart Cities Mission. Besides cutting down on energy expenses, the Corporation also had plans to modernize the entire street lighting infrastructure with sophisticated technologies.
The basic objective of the project is to fulfil the city’s increasing street light demand and improve the overall energy efficiency of the corporation's street lighting system. This system will lead to substantial savings in consumption of electricity without compromising quantity or quality, ultimately resulting in cost reductions and savings for the corporation.
The LED Street Lights project features energy-efficient LED lamps with energy efficient LED luminaries placed at all the major and connecting roads of the city. Adequate and required illumination is maintained on the roads of Tiruppur as per IS standards after choosing proper lamp technology. A foolproof measuring system will be in place to verify the energy savings. Tube lights and other conventional lamps on the streets have been successfully replaced with energy efficient LED luminaries.
Other crucial features of the LED Street Lights project include remote ON/OFF of lights by GPS or time-based switching and wireless monitoring and controlling of each service connection through GSM/GPRS technology. Streetlight controllers have been installed at each service connection/switching point where it is not possible to control and monitor the streetlights automatically. The new energy efficient lamps have been integrated with the existing street light controllers, wherever available.
The total budget allocated for the LED Street Lights project is Rs. 16.92 crores. The project has been successfully completed.
